Showing sustainable responsibility thanks to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)

“Where does your aluminium come from?” It is one of the most common questions we receive as an aluminium systems house, and an important question too. Transparent third-party certifications such as the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) help ensure our aluminium is sourced and produced in a responsible and sustainable way.

What is ASI?

More than a decade ago, the aluminium sector acknowledged that, looking at the material’s journey from bauxite mines to the end user, changes were needed for the planet and for the people. To foster this shift and to foster collaboration towards this goal, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative framework was created.

The ASI framework ensures responsible and sustainable production, sourcing, and stewardship of aluminium. Official ASI certification assures building professionals that the aluminium they choose for their projects meets rigorous global sustainability standards across the full value chain, from extraction to recycling. It also proves that the production process addresses critical ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria like climate, biodiversity, human rights, and circularity.

Why is it important to you?

For architects and contractors, ASI helps achieve green building certifications. Thanks to the clear information, you can meet client and regulatory demands related to transparency in material sourcing and lifecycle impact more easily. If you are a fabricator, products from ASI certified partners help you stand out in the market, while you contribute to the sustainable ambitions of designers and building owners alike.

ASI at Reynaers Aluminium

If we want to improve the lifetime of buildings and establish a sustainable and circular value chain, transparency and traceability are key. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative helps make our mission a reality: to create more sustainable living and working spaces for people all over the world.

Reynaers Aluminium is ASI member since 2024 and Reynaers Campus Duffel is ASI Performance Standard certified since April 2026. The certificate considers the journey from bauxite ore to finished aluminium profiles, indicating and evaluating responsible processes both at our suppliers’ and our own facilities. It is living proof we care for futureproof quality and dare to challenge the status quo to reach more ethical and efficient production standards throughout the value chain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)?

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global non-profit organisation that sets sustainability standards for the entire aluminium value chain, from raw material extraction to recycling. Its certification system verifies that aluminium is produced, sourced and processed according to strict environmental, social and governance criteria.

By working with ASI-certified partners like Reynaers Aluminium, you can help ensure responsible aluminium production, transparency in the supply chain, and continuous improvements in sustainability performance.

Why is ASI certification important for sustainable construction?

ASI certification provides independent verification that aluminium is responsibly produced and sourced. The standard addresses key sustainability topics such as greenhouse-gas emissions, resource management, biodiversity, labour rights and occupational health and safety across the aluminium supply chain

For architects, developers and fabricators, specifying ASI-certified aluminium increases confidence that building materials meet recognised sustainability standards and support responsible sourcing in construction projects.

How does ASI certification support sustainable aluminium sourcing?

ASI certification promotes responsible sourcing by setting clear sustainability criteria for every stage of aluminium production and processing. Companies certified under the ASI Performance Standard must demonstrate compliance with environmental and social requirements through independent audits.

By supporting the ASI framework, Reynaers Aluminium strengthens transparency across its supply chain and helps drive the transition towards more sustainable aluminium solutions for windows, doors and façade systems.

Is ASI the only way to ensure sustainable sourcing?

At Reynaers Aluminium, we are convinced you have to consider sustainability from every angle if you want to see the bigger picture. Is the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative the perfect framework to ensure responsible sourcing? Not necessarily. Is it the holy grail to help build a more sustainable future? Probably not.

However, ASI is living proof of a sector-wide commitment to do better. It is an acknowledgement of the industry that when it comes to the material's journey from bauxite mines to the end user, changes need to be made for the planet and people. While it will not solve all problems, ASI certification is definitely a step in the right direction.
